History
Taggerty’s history can be traced to 1846 when a pastoral run named Taggerty Run began. Taggerty House was the homestead for the run. In 1870, gold was discovered on the Acheron River. This led to two settlements named Acheron Lower, and Acheron Upper. These were later renamed Acheron, and Taggerty, respectively. Taggerty was the name of the Post Office that opened in April 1876. Acheron Upper Primary School was opened in 1875. In 1891, a general store and a butter factory opened, reflecting the shift away from gold mining to dairy farming. Taggerty was named in 1890 to avoid confusion with Acheron Lower.
